This house is located on a rare vacant lot in San Francisco. The site is narrow and steeply sloped but with breathtaking views of the city and bay. The design solution was to arrange the disparate floor plates by positioning the front and rear rooms in a split-level relationship, connected by a bridge-like stair. Next to the stair, the building volume is carved away. The monitor skylight, calibrated to the sun’s position, bathes the middle of the house with indirect light and allows the windowless rear areas of the house, embedded in the hillside, to take advantage of light and views.
